Your wedding reception is a time for you and your husband to celebrate your new status as a married couple with all of your family and friends. This can also be the most costly part of planning your wedding.

Some reception locations will let you hire your own caterer; some will insist you use theirs. Some reception locations will provide linens and silverware at no extra charge, some will charge for each place setting. Some places even serve champagne for the toast and cut and serve your cake to your guests as a part of the reception package.

These are services that some reception locations charge you extra for—and they can add up quickly! Be sure to find out exactly what you will be paying for and how much everything will cost you. If a place can’t give you what you want for the price you need, cross them off your list.

Visit the reception sites

You will also need to visit each of the wedding reception sites on your list. You need to make sure that you can envision your reception taking place there. Ask the location manager to show you where the head table would be, where the dance floor would be, and where the cocktail hour or bar would be.

You should be able to imagine your reception and you should feel good about the location you ultimately choose. If you can’t imagine yourself having your wedding reception there, or you feel uncomfortable at a location, move on.

Other details

Some of the other details you’ll need to think about include what you will be serving your guests and how you will be serving them.

Will you hire your own caterer or use one provided by the reception location you choose (again, some places have restrictions for this)? Will you have a sit down dinner or a buffet? Will you serve hors d’oeuvres? Will you have an open bar? This will all affect your cost, so be sure to explore all your options and budget accordingly.

Check your budget

Planning the wedding reception can be the most fun part of the wedding planning process, but it is also easy to quickly go over your budget. Luckily, you have lots of options in this area.
